Outpatient Rehab in Tennessee, Alabama and Louisiana

Structured treatment while you live at home, at facilities across the Recover Now network

Written and clinically reviewed by Amanda Kiner, LPC, LMHC, LCMHC, CPCS, NCC · Last reviewed October 2026

Outpatient rehab is structured treatment for substance use and mental health that you attend by day or evening while living at home. Recover Now connects you to partial hospitalization (PHP), intensive outpatient (IOP) and outpatient programs at four facilities in the network: Grace Land Recovery in Cordova, Tennessee, Chattanooga Recovery Center in Chattanooga, Tennessee, Recover Now Central Alabama in McCalla, Alabama, and Longbranch Recovery in Covington, Louisiana.

Here, outpatient rehab means addiction and mental health care, not physical therapy. Worried about cost or privacy? Benefits checks are free and confidential, and admissions is available 24/7.

What Is Outpatient Rehab?

Outpatient rehab gives you scheduled clinical care and sends you home at the end of each session. You keep your own bed, and often your job, classes or parenting routine, while you work with a treatment team on recovery.

It can be a starting point or a step down. Some people begin at the outpatient level after an assessment. Others move into PHP or IOP after medical detox or a residential stay, so the structure doesn't stop when they go home.

The right level comes from a clinical assessment. The ASAM Criteria, the most widely used placement standard in addiction care, match people to a level of care by looking at medical, psychological and social needs together.

Outpatient Levels of Care Compared

Outpatient levels differ by hours and structure, not by quality of care. You can move between them as your needs change.

Level Weekly hours Typical length Offered at
Partial hospitalization (PHP) 25 to 30 (30 at Central Alabama) About 90 days with IOP (Grace Land, Chattanooga); about 45 days (Central Alabama) Grace Land Recovery, Chattanooga Recovery Center, Recover Now Central Alabama
Intensive outpatient (IOP) 9 to 18 Part of about 90 days with PHP; set by your plan Grace Land Recovery, Chattanooga Recovery Center, Longbranch Recovery (Covington)
Standard outpatient and aftercare Fewer than IOP Ongoing, set with your clinician Grace Land Recovery; continuing-care planning at Grace Land and Chattanooga

Outpatient vs. Residential Treatment

Residential treatment means living at the facility; outpatient means you go home each day. The better fit depends on your medical needs, your safety at home and how much structure you need right now.

Factor Outpatient (PHP, IOP, OP) Residential
Where you sleep At home, or in sober living At the facility
Weekly time in treatment 9 to 30 hours About 8 hours of programming a day, 7 days a week, at most network residential sites
Typical length in the network About 45 to 90 days, depending on site About 30 to 45 days

Not sure which side you're on? Admissions can help you sort it out in one call, or you can read more about residential treatment in the network.

Is Outpatient Rehab Right for You?

Outpatient care tends to fit when you're medically stable, safe at home and able to keep a treatment schedule.

Outpatient rehab may be a fit if you:

  • Are an adult, 18 or older
  • Are medically stable and don't need withdrawal management
  • Have a safe, supportive place to live, or access to sober living
  • Are stepping down from detox or residential care and want continued structure
  • Need to keep up with work, school or family while you get help

A higher level of care may be safer if you:

  • Have withdrawal symptoms or need medical monitoring to stop using
  • Don't have a safe or substance-free place to stay
  • Have tried outpatient care before and it wasn't enough

Not sure where you land? You're not alone in that. Admissions completes a free, confidential assessment and recommends a level of care, with no obligation. If you're in crisis right now, call or text 988.

What Happens in Outpatient Care

Treatment combines clinical care, evidence-based therapy and practical support, each offered as clinically appropriate for your stability and treatment plan.

  • Individual, group and family therapy: sessions built around your treatment plan, with loved ones involved to rebuild support at home.
  • Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT): links thoughts, feelings and behaviors and teaches ways to change unhelpful patterns.
  • DBT-informed skills: emotion regulation, distress tolerance and relationships.
  • Motivational interviewing: conversations that build your own reasons and readiness to change.
  • Trauma-informed care: with trauma-focused therapy when clinically appropriate.
  • Relapse prevention: a concrete plan for the high-risk situations you can already see coming.
  • Medication management: including medication-assisted treatment when clinically appropriate.
  • Case management and peer support: help with work, housing and benefits, plus support from people in recovery.
  • Wellness and experiential programming: mindfulness and life skills, plus Saturday adventure, equine or recreational therapy at Chattanooga.
  • Safety and discharge planning: a plan for hard moments and for your next step after treatment.

What Happens When You Reach Out

Getting started takes one call or one form, and admissions handles most of the steps for you.

  1. Call or submit the form. The helpline at (205) 533-6509 is available 24/7. After a verification form, admissions usually follows up within five minutes.
  2. Free, confidential benefits check. Calling for someone you love? Admissions can check benefits on their behalf.
  3. Clinical assessment by phone. A complimentary assessment looks at your health, your substance use, your mental health and your home situation.
  4. Matched to a facility and level of care. If you need withdrawal management first, admissions arranges medical detox elsewhere in the network before outpatient care begins.
  5. Insurance handled, start date set. When your plan requires it, admissions contacts your insurer and requests prior authorization for you, then schedules your first day.

At the facility, your care team builds an individualized treatment plan and adjusts it as you progress.

Support for Veterans and Military Families

TRICARE is accepted at Grace Land Recovery, Chattanooga Recovery Center and Longbranch Recovery, and Longbranch also accepts VA benefits. If you are a veteran, a service member, or family calling for one, say so on the first call. In Louisiana, admissions can also tell you about NORA, the network's veteran sober-living houses in Covington.

Insurance and Paying for Outpatient Rehab

Facilities in the network accept most private insurance plans, including employer-sponsored and Marketplace plans, and your network status is confirmed during verification.

  • Accepted isn't the same as in network. Your verification shows how your plan applies at the facility you're matched to, including copays and deductibles.
  • Prior authorization: admissions contacts your insurer, requests prior authorization for you and handles the insurance process so you don't have to.
  • Private pay: available. Rates depend on level of care and length of stay, which the clinical team sets after a complimentary phone assessment.

Start a free, confidential check on the insurance verification page, or read how to pay for rehab for more on costs.
