Dual Diagnosis Treatment

Co-occurring mental health and substance use care across five Southeastern states.

Medically reviewed by Angela Camp, MA · Last reviewed September 2026

When a mental health condition and substance use happen together, treating one without the other rarely holds. Recover Now is one confidential phone call that connects you to programs across five Southeastern states where both are treated under a single plan.

We are the front door, not the facility. Our team learns what you are dealing with, checks your insurance at no cost, and matches you to a program in our network that fits your clinical needs and your life.

Have questions? Just reach out.

Our team is available 24/7 to talk. Always with compassion, never with pressure.

What is Dual Diagnosis?

Dual diagnosis, also called co-occurring disorder care, treats a mental health condition and a substance use disorder at the same time rather than in sequence. SAMHSA recommends integrated treatment for co-occurring disorders.

Integrated means one team and one plan. Your therapist, your prescriber and your medical providers work from the same treatment goals instead of running two programs that never talk to each other.

In practice, a program treating both together will:

  • Screen for mental health symptoms and substance use at intake, not just one of them
  • Build a single treatment plan naming goals for both conditions
  • Put therapy and medication management under one clinical team
  • Include family and support people when you want them there
  • Plan the step down to outpatient care, housing or community support before you leave

Signs that both conditions need treating together

You do not need a formal diagnosis to start this conversation. These patterns are the common ones.

  • Drinking or using to manage anxiety, low mood or sleep
  • Depression or panic getting worse as use increases
  • Repeated relapse after short stretches of sobriety, despite wanting to stop
  • Past trauma that surfaces whenever use stops
  • A sharp drop in daily functioning at work, school or home

If any of these sound familiar, a free assessment will tell you more than another month of guessing.

Conditions treated alongside substance use

Condition Typical clinical approach Common step-down support
Major depression Antidepressant medication where indicated, CBT, relapse prevention tied to mood shifts Outpatient therapy, medication follow-up
Generalized anxiety CBT, skills training, medication where indicated Intensive outpatient, coping skills work
PTSD and trauma Trauma-focused therapy including EMDR, medication where indicated Trauma-informed outpatient care, sober living
Bipolar disorder Mood stabilizers, close psychiatric monitoring, psychotherapy Coordinated psychiatric and addiction aftercare
Eating disorders Medical and nutritional monitoring, psychotherapy Specialist eating disorder or dual diagnosis programs
Alcohol use disorder Behavioral therapy, medication options where appropriate Outpatient therapy, relapse prevention
Opioid use disorder Counseling plus medication-assisted treatment where offered Continued medication management, outpatient care

Medication-assisted treatment pairs FDA-approved medicines with counseling for opioid and alcohol use disorders. Availability varies by facility. Ask admissions which programs in your state offer it.

Levels of care for co-occurring conditions

The right level depends on withdrawal risk, how severe your psychiatric symptoms are, whether home is safe and stable, and what you are responsible for day to day.

Level Setting Typical length Best fit
Detox Medically supervised withdrawal management 3 to 7 days Acute withdrawal needing medical stabilization
Residential Live-in program with daily therapy 30 to 90+ days Complex substance use with co-occurring trauma or safety concerns
PHP Structured day program, no overnight stay 2 to 6 weeks Needs full-day clinical care but can sleep safely at home
IOP Scheduled outpatient sessions, 9 to 15 hours weekly 8 to 12+ weeks Working or studying, needs consistent therapy
Outpatient Weekly therapy and medication management Ongoing Medically stable, maintenance phase
Sober living Structured recovery housing Varies Needs a stable living environment alongside treatment

Not every facility offers every level. Levels of care vary significantly across our network, so ask admissions which programs near you provide what you need.

Where we provide co-occurring care

Recover Now connects people to programs across Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana and Tennessee.

These facilities in our network publish dedicated co-occurring and dual diagnosis programs. Check each location page for its own levels of care, licensure and accreditation, which differ by site.

Each of our residential locations is designed to feel safe, calm, and comfortable. The goal is to offer the structure you need in an environment that feels more like a retreat than a hospital. If you're unsure which location is right for you, we're here to help you find the best fit.

What to expect from first call to first week

1. Confidential call and insurance check. Admissions takes your history, current medications and immediate concerns. We run a free benefits check and explain what your plan covers before you commit to anything.

2. Clinical assessment. A biopsychosocial assessment reviews your medical, psychological and social situation. A prescriber reviews symptoms and medication needs.

3. Treatment plan. You, your clinical team and your family if you choose build one plan with clear goals. The plan names your level of care and the therapies you will receive.

4. Program start. Orientation covers the daily schedule, therapy types and medication management. Staff confirm logistics and medical orders.

5. First-week review. Clinicians check safety, engagement and early progress, then adjust. Reviews continue on a set schedule through your stay.

Veterans and service members

Recover Now works with VA and TRICARE, and the network includes Longbranch's NORA veteran sober-living houses in Louisiana. Veterans carrying combat trauma alongside substance use often do better in programs that understand military culture rather than translating it.

If you are a veteran or on active duty, tell admissions on the first call. It changes which programs we look at and how benefits get verified.
