Recovery does not always mean stepping away from your whole life. An intensive outpatient program gives you real clinical structure, several hours of therapy across multiple days each week, while you sleep in your own bed and keep showing up for work, school and the people who count on you.
Recover Now is the front door to that care. One call connects you to a real person who will check your benefits, talk through where you are, and match you to a facility in our network that offers the level of support you actually need.
Have questions? Just reach out.
You do not need it figured out before you call. Admissions will listen, check your coverage at no cost, and tell you honestly what the right next step is, even if that step is not with us.
Program at a Glance
- What it is. Clinically supervised therapy several days a week. No overnight stay.
- Time commitment. Typically 9 to 15 hours a week, group and individual.
- Program length. Usually 6 to 12 weeks, adjusted to your progress. (Flag 3)
- Getting started. A free, confidential benefits check the same day you call. Start dates depend on the facility.
- Who it helps. Medically stable adults with a safe place to live who need structure without 24-hour supervision.
What is an Intensive Outpatient Program?
IOP sits in the middle of the treatment continuum: more support than weekly therapy, less containment than living at a facility.
The level of care is defined in The ASAM Criteria, the framework providers and insurers use to match people to the right intensity of care. ASAM places IOP at Level 2.1, an average of 9 to 19 service hours a week for adults. That is what separates it from standard outpatient therapy.
Most people arrive from one of two directions: stepping down after detox, residential care or PHP, or stepping up from weekly therapy because weekly is no longer enough. Both are normal. Neither is a setback.
Is an Intensive Outpatient Program Right For You?
IOP usually fits when:
- You are medically stable, with no acute withdrawal. For most people, detox is already behind them.
- You have a safe place to live, at home or in sober housing.
- You can commit to several hours of therapy across multiple days, mornings or evenings.
- You are ready for group work as well as one-on-one therapy.
- You need structured relapse prevention while keeping your daily responsibilities.
IOP is not the right level of care if you need round-the-clock medical monitoring, inpatient detox or residential eating-disorder care. If you are not sure, call. Getting the level of care wrong costs time nobody has.
What IOP treats
Facilities in our network treat substance use and co-occurring mental health conditions together: alcohol use disorder, opioid, stimulant and other drug use disorders, depression and anxiety, PTSD and other trauma-related conditions, and co-occurring diagnoses that need therapy and medication management coordinated by one team.
Several facilities also run gender-specific and family programming. Availability varies, and the helpline can tell you what runs where.

How IOP Compares to PHP and Standard Outpatient Care
*Hour ranges follow The ASAM Criteria. Where a program lands inside a range depends on the facility and your treatment plan.
| Standard outpatient | Intensive outpatient (IOP)This page | Partial hospitalization (PHP) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hours per week | 1 to 8 | 9 to 19 | 20 or more |
| Typical schedule | One or two sessions a week | Three to five days a week, mornings or evenings | Most of the day, most weekdays |
| Overnight stay | No | No | No |
| Best for | Maintaining progress | Real structure while keeping work, school or family routines | Near-daily clinical support without residential care |
| Common role | Long-term aftercare | Step down from residential or PHP, or step up from weekly therapy | Step down from residential, or an alternative to it |

What Happens in an Intensive Outpatient Program
Clinical Care
- Individual therapy on your goals and your triggers.
- Group counseling for coping skills and accountability.
- Family sessions, to repair relationships and build support that lasts past the program.
- Psychiatric evaluation and medication management for co-occurring conditions.
- Medication-assisted treatment where clinically appropriate, at select facilities.
- Case management for appointments, benefits and community resources.
- Discharge planning and step-down coordination.
Therapeutic Approaches
- Cognitive behavioral therapy, to change the thinking that drives the behavior.
- Dialectical behavior therapy, for emotional regulation and distress tolerance.
- Motivational interviewing.
- Relapse-prevention groups, planning for the high-risk situations you already see coming.
- Whole-person supports: mindfulness, movement and nutrition.

What to Expect, from Your First Call to Your First Week
- Call and check your benefits. This part is ours. One call reaches admissions, who verify your insurance through a free, HIPAA-compliant check and tell you what your plan covers, your copay, and whether prior authorization applies. Free and confidential whether or not you go further.
- A placement assessment. A licensed clinician talks with you about your history, current symptoms and prior treatment. The goal is the right level of care at the right facility, not the program you happened to call about.
- Intake at your facility. The facility's clinical team completes a full assessment, reviews your medications, and builds a treatment plan with you.
- Your program starts. Day one covers what to expect, confidentiality, group guidelines and how to reach your care team. Bring photo ID, insurance paperwork, a list of current medications and an emergency contact.
- Your plan gets adjusted. Your care team tracks attendance, symptoms, medication response and whether family involvement would help. Schedule, therapy mix and level of care can all change. You are not locked into the plan you started with.
Schedule formats
Most people in IOP are also working, studying or raising children. Common formats: weekday mornings, weekday evenings, a weekend track, an intensive step-down schedule after residential care, and hybrid schedules mixing in-person with telehealth.
