What Is Residential Treatment?

Residential treatment is a live-in level of care for substance use and co-occurring mental health conditions. You stay on site, follow a structured daily schedule and take part in individual and group therapy, skills work and planning for life after discharge. Many people call it inpatient rehab.

It's different from a psychiatric hospital stay, which focuses on short-term crisis stabilization, and from outpatient care, where you go home each night. Residential usually follows detox when detox is needed, and steps down to PHP, IOP, outpatient care or sober living.

Detox, if needed→Residential→PHP or IOP→Outpatient or sober living

Who residential treatment is for

Residential treatment usually fits when:

✓ Home is a trigger
Staying sober in your current environment has been hard.
✓ Relapse happened
You have relapsed after outpatient care or detox alone.
✓ More than substance use
Depression, anxiety or trauma are part of the picture alongside substance use.
✓ Home lacks support
Home is unstable, or you have limited support there.
✓ Outpatient wasn't enough
Outpatient care or IOP wasn't enough the first time.
Residential may not be the right level if you need hospital-level medical or psychiatric care. If you're unsure, call. Admissions will help you find the right level, and can check benefits on a loved one's behalf.

Care for Mental Health and Substance Use Together

Substance use and depression, anxiety or trauma often feed each other, so residential programs in the network treat them together.

Coordinated treatment planning
One team works from one plan for both conditions.
Therapy on both fronts
Individual, group and family sessions address the symptoms that drive use.
Medication management
Prescriptions are reviewed together, when clinically appropriate.
Family involvement
Loved ones learn how to support recovery and set healthy boundaries.
