Does TRICARE Cover Rehab?

Often, yes. Here’s how to check yours.

TRICARE may cover substance use treatment when it’s medically necessary, including detox, inpatient and residential care, partial hospitalization (PHP), intensive outpatient programs (IOP) and medication-assisted treatment (MAT). What your plan pays depends on your plan, your sponsor status and the care your clinical assessment supports.

Recover Now is a network of treatment facilities across the Southeast, and most of them accept TRICARE. One call to admissions gets you a free, confidential benefits check and a clear next step.

  • Prior authorization is generally required for non-emergency inpatient and residential admissions. Rules for PHP and IOP vary by region and beneficiary type.
  • Active duty service members need a referral and prior authorization for mental health and substance use care outside a military hospital or clinic, except emergency inpatient care.
  • Most Recover Now facilities accept TRICARE. Lotus Wellness, the Eating Disorder Treatment Center of Louisiana and Recover Now Central Alabama don’t.
  • Free, confidential benefits checks, 24/7. Call (205) 533-6509 and admissions requests prior authorization for you.

What TRICARE May Cover for Addiction Treatment

TRICARE lists these substance use disorder services as ones it may cover when they’re medically necessary and proven, according to TRICARE’s substance use disorder treatment coverage page.

  • Inpatient services, emergency and non-emergency
  • Detox for withdrawal management
  • Partial hospitalization programs (PHP)
  • Intensive outpatient programs (IOP)
  • Mental health therapy services
  • Medication-assisted treatment, including office-based opioid treatment and opioid treatment programs

TRICARE doesn’t cover aversion therapy or unproven treatments. Sober living isn’t on TRICARE’s list of covered substance use services, so ask admissions about housing options before you plan around it.

Levels of Care in the Recover Now Network

How TRICARE Coverage Works

Your plan and sponsor status shape the rules

Coverage and cost depend on whether you’re on TRICARE Prime or TRICARE Select, whether the sponsor is active duty or retired, and whether you’re the sponsor or a family member.

TRICARE Prime generally routes care through a primary care manager (PCM). TRICARE Select gives you more choice of TRICARE-authorized providers, usually with higher cost shares. Your benefits check confirms what applies to you.

When prior authorization comes in

  • Inpatient and residential care: non-emergency admissions generally need a referral and prior authorization. Emergency admissions don’t need it up front, but the regional contractor has to be notified soon after admission.
  • PHP and IOP: requirements differ by TRICARE region and plan, so admissions confirms them during your benefits check.
  • Outpatient therapy: most beneficiaries don’t need a referral or authorization to see a TRICARE network provider. Active duty service members do.
  • Active duty service members: a PCM referral and prior authorization are needed for mental health and substance use care outside a military hospital or clinic, except emergency inpatient care.

Our admissions team contacts TRICARE and requests prior authorization for you, so you don’t have to manage the paperwork alone. Approval isn’t guaranteed and depends on the clinical documentation.

Medication-assisted treatment

TRICARE covers MAT through office-based opioid treatment and through opioid treatment programs, and its medication-assisted treatment coverage page says no pre-authorization is needed in either setting. Some medications outside the TRICARE formulary may still need pharmacy approval. Methadone for opioid use disorder is dispensed only through federally certified opioid treatment programs.

If TRICARE denies coverage

A denial isn’t always the final word. Your denial letter explains why and how to appeal, including the deadline. Ask for the reason in writing, then work with the treating facility to send any missing clinical records. Our admissions team can walk you through the next step.

How to Check Your TRICARE Coverage

Three steps, and the benefits check and phone assessment are free.

Gather your details

  • The sponsor’s name and the beneficiary’s relationship to the sponsor
  • The beneficiary’s date of birth
  • Your TRICARE plan name and the DoD Benefits Number from the military ID card
  • The kind of care you’re looking for, if you know it

Make sure the beneficiary’s DEERS (Defense Enrollment Eligibility Reporting System) record is current. TRICARE eligibility runs through DEERS.

Ask us to check your benefits

Call (205) 533-6509 any time, or submit the secure verification form. Admissions usually follows up within five minutes of a form submission.

Assessment, authorization and admission

A complimentary phone assessment helps the clinical team recommend a level of care and a facility. If TRICARE requires prior authorization, admissions requests it for you, then schedules your admission or start date.

Recover Now Facilities That Accept TRICARE

TRICARE is accepted at these facilities in the Recover Now network. Each facility page lists its own programs and credentials.
